Seriously??

I was in the grocery store this evening and saw a headline in The New York Times that said the now caught Russian spies "...fitted in well..." Now, I am not the all knowing English teacher, but that headline just screams "stupid!" Just say it out loud to yourself....they fitted in well...shouldn't it read....they fit in well? I did some checking...and found that I am correct. You can only use fitted as the past tense for fit in certain circumstances...and this was not one of them.

I've always heard that they write newspapers and magazines to an 8th grade reading level...but come on...seriously??

*I went online after seeing the printed copy of the newspaper...and they had changed the headline to read "...blended in well..." HA!
